Full Description
KILVER COURT
Kilver Court was originally owned by the Whiting family (woollen merchants). In 1844 the factory was taken over by the Hardesty Brothers (silk throwers from Yorkshire) and they too lived at the Great House until the factory fell into decline and was taken over by social reformer Ernest Jardine MP.
The site was re-established as a model factory manufacturer of lace making equipment and Jardines Park was created and continued in production until the Great Depression of 1929.
The site was acquired by the Showering family in the 1950's as part of their expanding brewing/Babycham empire and Francis Showering oversaw the landscaping of the gardens based on a Gold Medal winning Chelsea Flower Show exhibit.
By the mid-1990's the site had fallen into disuse and was aqcuired by Roger Saul (founder of Mulberry) who brought their offices and factory shop to this location. The offices have since relocated but the Mulberry Factory Shop remains and draws visitors from far afield.
The majority of the offices are currently occupied by Mendip Housing (part of the Aster Housing Association) but who are due to relocate to purpose built offices elsewhere in 2011.
The whole of the Kilver Court complex is now set within the Conservation Area.
THE GARDENS
The formal gardens have a carefully manicured beauty and serenity with cascading waterfalls and the former millpond belying its Industrial past. In 2008 Roger Saul opened the Kilver Court Gardens to the general public and now has a planning consent for the development of a Glasshouse as a visitor centre and a cafe at the ground floor of the Directors Suite. The Charlton Viaduct forms a stunning backdrop to the gardens and is Grade II listed.
